Halloween Day by Day: "The Raven" (2012)

One of the icons of the horror literature genre is none other that Edgar Allan Poe.  Pretty much every short story he's written has been adapted onto the big and small screens. Edgar Allan Poe's death was very much like his stories- mysterious, creepy... and unsolved.  So, it was only a matter of time before the "story" behind the events leading up to his death was turned into a film... A   series of murders based upon Poe's short stories lead the police to investigate him as a suspect.  To clear his name, Poe must embark on a game of literary cat and mouse- and journey to the dark corners of his mind to find the real killer... at any price... The concept behind this movie is certainly interesting- especially for Poe fans and experts.  It moves at a fairly good clip, with some decent twists and turns to keep the viewer interested. The characters aren't too bad either- with Poe being the best of the lot of course.  There isn't much in th...

Five Horror Novels I'd Love to See as Movies

I love movies.  And I love books.  So it's only natural that I'd love movies based on books, right? Right. So, without too much ado, here are five horror novels I'd love to see as a movie: 1.  "Bag of Bones" (Stephen King)- Widow Mike Noonan returns to his summer house after his wife passed away.  Soon, he is drawn into a ghostly mystery of what the local millionaire, Max Devore wants with three year old Kyra... and how it's connected to an old curse that was put upon the town by blues singer Sara Tidwell... 2.  "The Servants of Twilight" (Dean Koontz)-  After Christine Scavello and her son, Joey are accosted in a mall parking lot by a crazed lady they find themselves being stalked by a mysterious cult.  Hiring detective Charlie Harrison, they hope to discover what the cult wants with her son, and stop them.  What they discover leads them down a rabbit hole of religious fervor as they learn the cultist are willing to die... and kill in ...

The Tell-Tale Heart (1960)

One of the perennial favorites when it comes to horror in general is Edgar Allan Poe.  His tales of the macabre and the unusual provide fertile soil for directors and actors when it comes to cultivating the heebie jeebies in people... Edgar is a quiet, retiring sort of person- much too shy of a person to ask his beautiful neighbour out for a date.  On the advice of his friend Carl , Edgar asks Betty out... only to find out later that the two have started an affair behind his back.  Taking matters into his own hands, he soon discovers that the heartbeat of guilt is a difficult one to stop... This " What Movie Wednesday " winner (part of last Wednesday's double feature), is a loose adaptation of Poe's famouse short story .  While there are several major differences between this movie and the source material, the spirit and core premise is still there.  For such a simple movie, the story is strong and solid.  Normally, the ending (similar to that of "...

The Oval Portrait (1972)

I'm a fan of Edgar Allan Poe, so it was a pleasant surprise that one of the movies I watched during " Terrorpolooza 2012 " was an adaptation of one of his stories... Genevieve has come home to claim ownership of her deceased uncle's  house.  Soon, however, she discovers the tragic details behind her cousin's death- details that could cost her mind... and her soul ... " The Oval Portrait " isn't a perfect film, but I still found it enjoyable.  The story is simple, but is strengthened by the backstory of the cousin's death.  The pacing isn't too bad, though fans of horror movies that get right into the scares might be put off by the slower pacing and build up.  The story itself isn't so much frightening as macabre and disturbing... which is to be expected of a Poe story, actually. While Genevieve is a little flat, the characters of her cousin and the Confederate soldier she loved help to make up for that.  The uncle was interesting...
