Friday the 13th: The Game (2017)

It is inevitable that movies eventually get turned into a game, including horror movies.  " Friday the 13th " is no exceptional. This is mainly an online multi-player game, though it does have a limited offline single player mode.  I wouldn't mind seeing a sort of campaign mode added at some point to give it more options for playability. I don't have much to complain about this game, actually.  You, and up to seven other players are in a match.  One of you plays Jason, while the others are all "camp counsellors".  Jason's aim is to kill the counsellors (naturally), while the counsellors try to either survive to the end of the time- or escape. As a counsellor, you move around the map from one cabin to another collecting items to aid your survival.  Along the way, you can also find parts of the escape car or boat- or you can find the parts to repair the phone, and call the cops.  In addition, there's a way to contact Tommy Jarvis, and resurrec...

Freddy vs Jason vs Ash (Jeff Katz, James Anthony Kuhoric, Jason Craig)

If you've seen " Freddy vs Jason " (2003), then you know what happens when you mix two famous horror franchises together.  What would happen if you added a THIRD...? An undead horror has returned to the forests of Crystal Lake seeking an evil book at the behest of a nightmarish figure intent on reshaping the world to his warped dreamscape.  The only thing standing between these two monsters and genocidal slaughter is The Chosen One, a chainsaw... and a boomstick. .. " Freddy vs Jason vs Ash " was quite enjoyable- though a fair bit more serious in tone than you'd expect from a book featuring Ash Williams of " Evil Dead " fame.  There's humour to be sure- but it's mostly delivered in the form of quips by Ash and Freddy, rather than the slapstick that common to Ash's stories.  In general, the blending of the more seriousness of the " Nightmare on Elm Street " and " Friday the 13th " franchises is blended nicely wi...

Friday the 13th (1980)

In this era of remakes, reboots, re-imaginings, remixes and rehashes, I like to go back and look at the original version of many of the films being made these days- like 1980's " Friday the 13th ". Twenty years after the death of a some camp counselors, Steve Christy hopes to reopen Camp Crystal Lake- despite the claims made by "Crazy Ralph" that the place is cursed, and that him and the rest of his staff will die.  While getting the camp ready, staff members start to disappear... What can I say about " Friday the 13th "?  Just this: iconic movie.  Pure and simple. While, the plot is basic and simple, it is still enough to allow the movie to develop the characters- and give us a movie twist that- at the time of release, was unexpected, and unprecedented.  It is this twist that helped to differentiate it from John Carpenter's "Halloween".  It also helped to keep it from simply being another slasher film.  A great little bit of sto...

Let's Begin Again...

The past decade or so has seen a series of remakes and reboots shunted into theatres.  "Halloween", "Friday the 13th", "A Nightmare on Elm Street" being the biggest names put out there.  This overflow of remakes and reboots has caused a serious drop in faith when it comes to Hollywood's ability to produce original and exciting horror movies. Personally, I'm not a big fan of remakes.  When I hear that a remake or a reboot of a franchise is being released, I'm automatically wary and sceptical. I can understand WHY Hollywood would want to remake a horror classic- they hope that they can recapture the success of the original. They want to earn money. The same goes for reboots.  Hollywood studio reps can say they "want to introduce a new audience" to the classic horror franchises, but ultimately what they mean is they want to feed younger people to the cash cow and milk the franchise for more money. Do remakes really NEED to be made? ...
