Halloween Day by Day: "Ultimate Werewolf Card Game"

Many games are a time for friends and family to get together, share some laughs, and enjoy each others company... And sometimes, it's a time to stalk your prey through the shadows of the night... and kill them... Ultimate Werewolf   by Bezier Games is a pretty simple, but fun game to play.  Each player draws a card with a role attached to it- either a "Villager" role, or a "Werewolf" role.  Each role has a unique ability and win condition.  The goal is simple:  Werewolves need to kill enough Villagers to gain numerical superiority, while the Villagers need to kill the Werewolf. Play is broken up into two phases:  Night and Day (duh!).  At night, those with night related abilities get to use them during their turn- and the Werewolves get to kill a Villager.  During the day, everyone tries to figure out and vote on who the Werewolf is... before killing them. This is a fun game that tests how well you know the quirks of the other p...

Halloween Day by Day: "Slender: The Arrival"

One of the most recent horror icons to hit the popular conciousness is Slenderman.  Starting as a "creepypasta" on the " Something Awful Internet Forum ", he has moved to real-life "sightings", movies, and video games.  We're going to check out one of the video games- " Slender: The Arrival ". After receiving disturbing letters from your friend Kate, you go to her house in the country to investigate.  You find her house empty... and the only clues point towards the dark forest nearby. You are soon in a fight for your life as you're stalked by a faceless horror... Slenderman... There are several "chapters" in this game that tell an actual story- unlike the original game which just plunks you in a forest looking for pages with little story involved.  The story is pretty interesting, though kinda standard for the genre.  Each chapter does allow for pretty good development of the story, and progresses at a decent pac...

7 Days to Die (2013)

When it comes to computer games, one of the biggest genres in recent years is the "Survival" genre.  One of the most prominent ones has been " 7 Days to Die ". The end of the world has occurred.  All that's left is you... and the hungry undead. Scavenge supplies.  Craft weapons.  Build your safe place.  Survive the Blood Moon. Survive... if you can... The Fun Pimps created a zombie survival game that is commonly described as, "Minecraft if it was a survival horror movie".  And it's a fairly apt description.  You have to find resources in order to craft and upgrade weapons, armour, and structures- all while surviving an unending stream of zombie stalkers. The concept is a great one, and is actually one that's really well suited to the horror genre.  This concept is aided in how it's executed. The mechanics are pretty simple to grasp, and fairly intuitive in that you don't have to waste time trying to figure out where every...

Strange Cases: The Tarot Card Mystery (2009)

While horror/thriller/suspense themed Hidden Object games may not lend themselves to the sort of scares that you'd get from a motion picture, some of them can have still provide engaging atmosphere and characters... FBI Agent Claire Ellery is assigned to investigate a simple open and shut kidnapping case... but her tendency to attract strange cases soon causes events that propel her down a much more sinister path.  Her only lead are a series of tarot cards left by a silent and anonymous "friend"... When it comes to casual game play- where there's no real pressure to hurry though the game, Hidden Object games are great.  You can work at them at your own pace.  You can either use the hint button provided to find something, or you can put your eyesight to the test and find the objects unaided.  The level of difficulty is really up to you. That lack of stress is one of the things I liked about this game.  The scenes where the objects are hidden, and the var...

Dark Fall: Lights Out (2002)

In the world of movies and books, sequels are seldom as original or enjoyable as the first installment.  The same can be said of video games ... You are a cartographer in 1912 sent to map out a piece of dangerous coastline.  Finding a lighthouse nearby, you become wrapped up in an investigation to find out why lighthouse keepers have been disappearing over the years... and you must find the answer before you become the next one to vanish after the lights go out ... This is the second game in the " Dark Fall " series- with " Dark Fall: The Journal " being the first.  You can't really call this game a sequel, since there is no real connection to " The Journal ".  The only connection is that the female paranormal investigator that went missing in " The Journal " makes an appearance. There is a vast difference between the graphics in this game, and the original.  In " The Journal ," the artwork is more drawn and moody, while...
