"Grizzly Shark" (Ryan Ottley)

Once in awhile you come across a comic that takes an idea that could be terrifying, adds copious amounts of humour, gore, and epicness that you just have to smile.  " Grizzly Shark " by Ryan Ottley is that comic for me. On an Earth not too unlike ours, there was a time where land was actually water, and where water was actually land.  Then the two reversed.  Most of life on the planet adapted and evolved into what we know today... except for two... Bears... and sharks.  They got mixed up . The premise of this comic is simple:  Sharks are the apex predator of the forests instead of bears, while bears took the place of sharks in the sea.  I was instantly intrigued by it... and I wasn't disappointed in the story utilized this premise to hilarious affect.  I found myself snickering and chortling at the absurdity of the situations, and the reactions of the characters.  This was horror parody done to perfection. " Grizzly Shark " has characte...

Dylan Dog: Dead of Night (2011)

Comics have come a long way in regards to being an acceptable form of entertainment- as has horror.  Which is why I was glad to find a horror comic movie... and Italian one no less. Dylan Dog is a private investigator... one who used to be the investigator of choice for the undead. Until an incident turned him into a pariah in the undead community. But now... a long dormant evil is waking up... and Dylan's in the thick of things again... The concept of a Private Investigator who's client were the undead really caught my attention.  The fact that it was based on an Italian comic really made me take notice.  It's a cool idea that I had to check out. The story itself was quite well done.  It was well paced, and developed the world in such a way that drew you into it, and moved you along with little bumpiness.  It had a nice modern sort of detective noir tone and feel to it that I quite liked. The characters were great as well.  Dylan Dog, Marcus...

Weird War Tales: Issue 107 (Jan 1982)

Growing up, I loved comics.  I especially loved the creepy ones... the odd ones... the weird ones.  DC Comics had one that mixed two of my favorite comic genres: war, and horror. From 1971 to 1983, this comic presented short stories of supernatural war stories.  I rather miss this series, and would love to have it return to publication. Today, I'll be examining Issue 107.  I like the cover art- which was done by the comic legend Joe Kubert.  His art was always so interesting and atmospheric.  The details he put into his panels, the way he used shadows and perspective was just genius. Story One : " Seize the Time !"  In this short story, time travellers from 1989 travel back to the past to prevent the take over of their homeland. This is certainly an interesting concept, and the execution was fairly good considering they only had five pages to tell it.  To be honest, this story could easily be extended to a fairly decent sized graph...

Afterlife With Archie (Roberto Aguirre-Sacas & Francesco Francavilla)

Zombies. Archie. You wouldn't expect the two of those things to fit together in a comic, right? Well, guess again.  They fit together, and do it well. What would you do if your pet was run over and killed?  If you're Jughead Jones, you'd perform a dark spell of resurrection to bring them back.  Too bad, it's the first step on the road to the end of Riverdale, and the life you knew ... Archie Comics shook things up in 2013 and 2014 with two big events that changed how people viewed the wholesome line of comics.  2014 July issue of " Life With Archie " saw Archie Andrews shot and killed, while October 2013 saw the first issue of " Afterlife With Archie " hitting the news stands. When I first heard of " Afterlife With Archie ", and that it was horror based, I figured that it would more or less be of a comedic nature, and keeping in line with the "family friendly" tone that the company had. Boy, was I pleasantly surpri...

Freddy vs Jason vs Ash (Jeff Katz, James Anthony Kuhoric, Jason Craig)

If you've seen " Freddy vs Jason " (2003), then you know what happens when you mix two famous horror franchises together.  What would happen if you added a THIRD...? An undead horror has returned to the forests of Crystal Lake seeking an evil book at the behest of a nightmarish figure intent on reshaping the world to his warped dreamscape.  The only thing standing between these two monsters and genocidal slaughter is The Chosen One, a chainsaw... and a boomstick. .. " Freddy vs Jason vs Ash " was quite enjoyable- though a fair bit more serious in tone than you'd expect from a book featuring Ash Williams of " Evil Dead " fame.  There's humour to be sure- but it's mostly delivered in the form of quips by Ash and Freddy, rather than the slapstick that common to Ash's stories.  In general, the blending of the more seriousness of the " Nightmare on Elm Street " and " Friday the 13th " franchises is blended nicely wi...

From Hell (Alan Moore & Eddie Campbell)

In my spare time, I enjoy collecting comics.  Fortunately, for you- there are quite a few horror comics out there... During the late 19th century, a vicious killer by the name of Jack the Ripper stalked the alleys of Whitechaple- bringing death, fear, and an undying legend to the annals of history. This is his story.. . Alan Moore is known in the comic world for amazing stories:  " Watchmen ", " V for Vendetta ", and " The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen ".  He continues that trend with " From Hell ".  The story is interesting, engaging, and flows smoothly, while presenting us with a unique look at the legend of Jack the Ripper.  The characters are well crafted, and fascinating.  There are numerous historical references made that add depth and texture to the plot. The art is great.  It plays nicely with shadows and textures to create a very suspenseful mood.  The sketchy nature of the drawings reflects the dirty, dingy atmosphere o...

Creepshow (1982)

Growing up, I loved reading horror comics and magazine- " Vampirella ", " Weird War Tales ", and EC's " Vault of Horror , " Tales From the Crypt ," and " The Haunt of Fear ".  I also loved watching horror anthology shows like " The Twilight Zone ".  This means I also enjoy horror anthology movies. " Creepshow " features five short horror stories present to us as stories from a comic book being read by a young teenager: " Father's Day ":  During the annual family get together, a family's deceased patriarch decides to drop in for cake; " The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill ":  After finding a crashed meteorite, Jordy Verrill watches as his farm- and himself, go through some changes; " Something to Tide You Over ":  There are some people you never get on the wrong side of, because you'll wind up to your neck in deep water.  Of course... there are some people you never ta...
