Halloween Day by Day: "The Thing" (1982)

Some movies are worth waiting for... even if it takes you 30 years... In an isolated research camp in Antarctica, the residents are surprised when a Norwegian helicopter chases a dog towards their camp.  Their surprise becomes bafflement when the helicopter opens fire on the dog before crashing and exploding. Such a simple start to their journey from bafflement to paranoia, and finally to terror... Jay has often bugged me about NOT having seen John Carpenter's " The Thing ", since it's one of his favorite films. I freely admit that I deserved the ribbing and ridicule.  In my defense though, I wanted to own the movie as part of my collection before watching it.  After 30 years, I finally managed to buy it and watch it. I can completely understand why it's one of Jay's favorite movies.  The concept, and the story are interesting, and well crafted.  The pacing is great, with the tension and engagement growing with each word said, look giv...

Halloween Day by Day in The Corner!

Greetings, everyone.   Welcome to October... a month of chilly breaths seen on the air, and shadowy phantom shapes seen flitting through the corners of our eyes.   The month of Halloween!   To celebrate this, our favorite month of the year, "The Corner of Terror" and " We Came From the Basement "   are teaming up to bring you 31 days of horror goodness.   That's right- 31 days of horror!   Every single day this month, both sites will be posting reviews, articles, and news about the horror genre we love.  We'll be offering fresh movies upon the altar of the damned, and possibly digging up some old classics for a stroll through the cinematic graveyard. We won't judge you for howling at the moon... though we suggest not biting off more than you can chew...   HALL...

The Prospector's Curse (2013)

We've got a quick review of the short film " The Prospector's Curse " today for you. Two fugitives come across a dying prospector who asks them for a proper Christian burial . Stealing his gold, the two ignore his request. That night however, they find that keeping a promise is a good policy to have ... " The Prospector's Curse " was written and directed by Josh Heisie, and stars Robert Nolan, David Roberts, and Johnny Quinn . Heisie has stated that this is actually just the first of a series of shorts that will focus on various horror themes- thrillers, creature features, and slasher films . If they're as fun to watch as this one was, I'm looking forward to a chance to watch the others. The premise is simple and effective- it could've supported a feature length storyline, actually. I also liked the characters of "Tubby" and Smith. They were unique and interesting. I enjoyed the way these two characters interacted...
