Update: Plans Plans Plans!

Tuesday saw the first article in the relaunch of " The Corner of Terror ".  Today, I'd like to take the opportunity to give you an idea of what to expect in the days, months, years ahead. First off, you've probably noticed a sleeker new look that's very similar to our partners at " From the Basement ".  Well, it's so the two blogs can put forth a more united, and cohesive "brand" in terms of being recognizable by those just sauntering through.  When you see us, hopefully you'll think of them as well- and vice versa.  I've also streamlined and tidied up the banner a bit, while keeping a nice horror element to it. You've probably also noticed that I prefaced Tuesday's article with " The Game Room ", and that it matches many of the articles I write over in The Basement as well.  Once again- it's intentional, so we can create a stronger tie between the two blogs.  Also it'll help make it a bit easier to...

What Movie Wednesday: "Quarantine" (2008)

I'm going to keep this review of 2008's " Quarantine " brief. Why?  Because if I didn't keep it brief, I would spend the whole article just cursing. And I try to be strategic with my cursing. This film simply fucking sucked. The story premise was interesting, but standard for the "Rage Zombie" type of film.  Everything that occurred was predictable.  Fucking predictable.  From start to end. Oh- and major fucking spoilers.  It's fucking rabies.  Rabies, people- rabies.  And it takes half the fucking movie for them to fucking figure it out.  What, the fucking vet- someone who fucking deals with animals, can't tell what rabies fucking looks like?  Fuck you, movie.  Just fuck you. Sorry.  This movie brings out the " Mulholland Drive " hate in me. The characters.  The fucking characters.  Just fuck them.  Of the entire cast of about 18 characters, there's only ONE that's likable.  ONE....

What Movie Wednesday: "Billy the Kid vs Dracula" (1966)

This past Wednesday, I brought back an old feature- "What Movie Wednesday".  It went well in my opinion, and I had fun doing the tweet along. So, here's the review! Billy the Kid has "retired" and gotten engaged to the daughter of a wealthy rancher.  Soon, however, Billy finds himself in for the fight of his life against the Lord of the Undead... Master of the Children of the Night... DRACULA!  Billy is his fiance's only chance of avoiding a fate worse than death. .. This is truly a B-Movie of epic proportions.  As Vance Kotrla (@SciFi_Romance) aptly put it: The story, the characters, the acting, the camera work... all of it.  Just ALL of it.  The best part was John Carradine (David Carradine's father)... especially his skill at giving us "crazy eyes" like the example below: See what I mean?  Just fantastic! Despite it being a highly flawed movie (aka- "HOW did this movie ever get made?" flawed), it was good fo...

We Now Return You to Your Regularily Programmed Program...

Hey, folks!  I hope you all had a good October (and enjoyed the articles I posted during it), and a good November! I recently went on my annual ten day vacation/retreat at my best friend's cabin.  While there, I watched and read a bunch of horror stuff.  Upon my return, I started to draft up my reviews, with the intention of transcribing them to the blog here, and getting back into a regular schedule of posting! Well, I'm proud- and glad, to announce that I've finished transcribing them all, and have set up the schedule for them. You will find now reviews and articles here every Tuesday and Thursday at Noon (Pacific Standard Time)! Yah, me! In addition, you'll be able to read non-horror related articles from me every Monday and Wednesday over on " We Came From the Basement " at about 5:00 pm (Pacific Standard Time). Woo Hoo! NOT ONLY THAT, THOUGH! Nooooo… there's more! I will also be making a concerted effort to post weekly on my persona...

Scary New Years! 2015

Happy New Year's everyone! The last time we posted on the blog was waaaaay back in April 2014- for which I apologize.  My job has a pretty irregular schedule, and my hours are odd to boot. But rejoice!  We're back from the dead again, with a plan to bring you the same great content we did before the break... as well as some ideas on how to bring you some other cool stuff over the course of the next year. And beyond. For starters, I'd like to welcome three new contributors to "The Corner of Terror"!  If you've ever read reviews on "We Came From the Basement", you'll know them:  Jason H, Matt B, and Suzanne WC.  Starting in February, you can expect to see a couple of reviews each month from them!  Yay! I've placed over on the right a schedule of when reviews, features, etc will be posted each month.  This will hopefully make it easier for readers to know when to visit the site for new reading material. "What Movie Wednesday...

The Corner of Terror... Back From the Dead!

Greetings, everyone.  You may have been wondering where I've been, and what I've been doing since about March 2013... and why this blog went dead. Well, Life has a way of taking you out of the game for a while- and such is what happened to me.  A combination of a new job and moving resulted in my having to put my reviews in Limbo for awhile. Now, however... I am rising from the grave to bring you more reviews of horror movies, books and games! There will be some changes occurring over the next couple of months.  Some of those changes are: "What Movie Wednesday"- Due to the way my work schedule is set-up, I don't have every Wednesday off- so I won't be able to do my weekly voting and tweet-along.  To make up for this, I will be creating a page here that will show a schedule of tweet-along dates, 24 hour tweet-along dates, review postings, and any other special events that I might be able to conduct. Navigation-  I'd like to make things a little...

Demonic (2006)

In most horror films, you can be guaranteed of three "B's"- Boobs, Butts, and Blood.  Some of them, rely on just those three things to draw an audience... A group of friends are travelling when they become lost in the middle of a forest.  An accident strands them in the woods, where people have gone missing... and flesh eating creatures roam the shadowy trees ... " Demonic " (also known as " Forest of the Damned " won as this week's, " What Movie Wednesday " selection, and offered up plenty of the three "B's" mentioned above.  Unfortunately, that was all that was appealing about this film. I liked the premise- angels that lusted after man and fell to earth in disgraceg the woods eating people.  Too bad the only real indications of the creatures' angelic origins was a biblical quote at the start, and a couple of crazed rants by two people.  The concept could've added a lot more depth to the story, and adding m...

Room 33 (2009)

Abandoned facilities such as mental institutions are an often used location in horror films .  It wasn't much different with the recent " What Movie Wednesday " winner, " Room 33 ". When their vehicle runs out of gas, a female roller derby team, and the couple they offered a ride to are forced to take shelter for the night in an abandoned mental institution .  They soon meet Roxy - a scared teenager with a mysterious connection to the facility... and the killer that is now stalking them from the shadows ... The premise, while not what one could call "original" these days is still one that promises potential.  The actual story used, however is pretty shallow and amounts to tedious repetition of characters being scared, concerned for Roxy, being bitchy and being killed.  There is very little in the way of emotionally engaging moments... or scares even.  The opportunities to explore the reasons for what was happening were wasted- rather than clear t...

The Tell-Tale Heart (1960)

One of the perennial favorites when it comes to horror in general is Edgar Allan Poe.  His tales of the macabre and the unusual provide fertile soil for directors and actors when it comes to cultivating the heebie jeebies in people... Edgar is a quiet, retiring sort of person- much too shy of a person to ask his beautiful neighbour out for a date.  On the advice of his friend Carl , Edgar asks Betty out... only to find out later that the two have started an affair behind his back.  Taking matters into his own hands, he soon discovers that the heartbeat of guilt is a difficult one to stop... This " What Movie Wednesday " winner (part of last Wednesday's double feature), is a loose adaptation of Poe's famouse short story .  While there are several major differences between this movie and the source material, the spirit and core premise is still there.  For such a simple movie, the story is strong and solid.  Normally, the ending (similar to that of "...

The Hatchet Murders (1975)

This past " What Movie Wednesday " was a double feature (something that seems to be rather common here in The Corner), and the first one I'll be reviewing is Dario Argento 's " The Hatchet Murders " (originally titled " Profondo Rosso "- " Deep Red ").   Marcus is a pianist who becomes a witness to a grisly murder.  Soon, he finds himself following a trail of clues that will lead him to a shocking confrontation with the killer... but may cost him his life .   Dario Argento is well known in the horror community for his movies " Suspiria " (1977) " Opera" (1987), and " Dawn of the Dead " (1979 as producer)- and deservedly so.  His movies tend to have a quality about them that sets them apart from most horror films .   The premise of " The Hatchet Murders " is simple and effective.  The story is well paced, interesting, and engaged my mind nicely.  Not once did I sit there not want...

"Twisted Sisters" (2006)

Sometimes, I wish I had a twin to take my place at things I don't want to attend- like meetings, lectures, work, etc.  But sometimes, I'm rather glad that I don't have a twin... Jennifer has a great life: a boyfriend who loves her, a good job, a nice home, and a baby on the way... and she recently discovered that she has an identical twin sister.  Too bad her twin wants to steal Jennifer's identity and life ... " Twisted Sisters " is one of those films that has moments of interest, but is seriously flawed in pretty much everything else.  The premise is okay, but the actual plot has some serious holes in its logic... and characters. Mostly the characters... especially the cops. I really did not like the cops.  For one thing, considering that Jennifer's boyfriend's dad is a well known Barrister, you'd think the cops would do everything they could to operate within the law.  Unfortunately, these cops don't.  They barge into her apartment w...

Frankenstein 80 (1972)

When I do my " What Movie Wednesday ," I find myself struggling to find witty, funny, or informative things to tweet as I'm watching the winner.  Other times... the movie provides fuel for tweets that have people crying from laughter... A serum that could help transplant patients has been stolen and beautiful women are being murdered- with their organs removed.  An investigative reporter becomes involved in the case and finds that a respected doctor has a dark secret to hide ... This was a fun movie to tweet along to- but mostly because there was so much to poke fun at.  This reworking of the classic " Frankenstein " story does a decent job storywise, but does suffer from some serious holes in its logic.  For instance, if the serum is so important, why is it kept in a beaker in an unlocked fridge in  its creator's office?  How did Frankenstein manage to construct a secret lab in the hospital where he works? How was he able to get the body parts witho...

Point of Terror (1971)

During my life, I've only come across ONE movie that enraged me, and made me so angry that I literally growl and mutter profanities at the mere mention of " Mulholland Drive " (2001).  Well, I recently found another movie to add to the "Rage List".. A nightclub singer has been having nightmares about beautiful women he knows being killed.  Soon, however, he discovers that they may be more than nightmares ... " Point of Terror "- one of this week's " What Movie Wednesday " winners, is a crap film.  That's right, a crap film.  Other than two of the women- the redheaded lady friend with the nice butt and the music exec's wife's daughter, I didn't really give a rat fart about the characters.  They were shallow, callous, and melodramatic.  I wanted them all to die, pretty much. The acting was melodramatic and soap operatic.  Dyanne Thorne (the music exec's wife), Lory Hansen (the daughter), Paula Mitchell (the redh...

Tweet Tweet Tweeting...

As many of you know- I do a lot of tweeting.  Wednesday nights, I tweet along to horror movies as part of " What Movie Wednesday ."  You probably also know that Thursday nights, I can be found  @camethebasement tweeting along to Jay and Shawn's radio show.  Well, I'm going to be doing a lot more tweeting starting this Friday. Why? Because this Friday will mark the first of a new Twitter series that sees me tweeting along to NON-Horror movies over in The Basement .  That's right- Jay and Shawn have agreed to let me invade their Twitter profile so that I can ramble, rant, and even mock along to all sorts of movies. So, follow along with me tonight as I tweet along to the " We Came From the Basement " radio show from 10:00 pm - 11:00 (PST).  You can listen to them on 92.5 CFBX on your FM dial- or you can listen via the internet at www.thex.ca !  Then join me tomorrow night starting at 7:00 pm (PST) on their Twitter account as I pop this week'...

The Bat (1926)

This past " What Movie Wednesday " saw the first time that a silent film was chosen for me to watch and tweet along to... While staying at the mansion of the local bank manager, a group of people are searching for the money that had been recently stolen from the bank.  Soon, their lives are at stake as well as The Bat searches for the hidden loot... and kills anyone who gets in their way... " The Bat " was originally based on a hit Broadway play written by Mary Roberts Rinehart and Avery Hopwood.  Until recently, this silent film was thought to have been a lost film- as are many films from the silent era of cinema.  Roland West went on to remake this film in 1930 as " The Bat Whispers "- which Bob Kane credited as the inspiration for the creation of Batman . I always enjoy the opportunity to watch silent films.  Some are masterpieces of cinematic magic and creativity, while others are interesting as a reminder of how far we have come in regards to...

Night (2005)

These days, it's fairly simple- and cheap to make a movie.  All you really need is a camera, people to act in the movie, decent editing software for video and sound, and directing skill.  Often, it's acting or the directing skills that make the difference between a Good , Bad , or Ugly movie... Detective Jimi Cannon's friend has stopped coming into work, and hanging out with him.  Jimi must find out why... and find a way to save his best friend from the seductive violence of the night... I actually quite like the premise, since it provides a lot of potential for interesting character interaction, action, suspense, and gore.  The love triangle between Mike (Jimi's partner), Tonia, and Konatsu is an interesting subplot- and is fortunately, not done the same way as in the " Twilight " books.  This combined with the main plot of Jimi trying to save Mike from the vampires could've made for a really enjoyable and entertaining movie. The characters are a...
